Barcelona plans few changes in the summer

Catalan newspaper El Periódico claims that Barcelona will make few transfers during the coming summer transfer window.

A serious reshuffle is the squad is expected for the summer of 2010, when the contracts of several players and the coaches expire and presidential elections will be held.

The preparations of next season already started a couple of months ago but all negotiations have now been stopped until the end of the season. Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola and Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain have agreed on the basic principle of continuity. The starting point would be to sign one player for each line.

Barcelona goalkeeper Albert Jorquera (30) would want to leave because he lost his place as second goalkeeper to Pinto. Because there's still some uncertainty about the renewal of Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés (27), Barcelona is working on several options with a different profile. Valladolid goalkeeper and Spanish youth international Sergio Asenjo (19) could be on the list.

With the contract of Barcelona left back defender Sylvinho (35) expiring, Barcelona is looking for a player who can replace him. The return of Brazilian central defender Henrique (22 - picture), who was signed last summer and who is playing on loan with German club Bayer Leverkusen this season, is being considered (read more

Barcelona also plans to buy two attacking players. Bayern Munich attacker and French international Franck Ribéry (26) is high on the list. If Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o (28), whose contract expires at the end of next season, would leave, Barcelona will look for a new striker.

With Lyon forward Karim Benzema (21) having expressed his wish to stay in France for at elast one more year (read more here), Barcelona is now looking at several options, that include Valencia forward David Villa (27), Liverpool forward Fernando Torres (25) and Arsenal forward Emmanuel Adebayor (25).

Asked about the rumours linking Liverpool forward and Spanish international Fernando Torres (24) with a move to Barcelona (read more here), Antonio Sanz, a spokesperson of the player's agency Bahía Internacional, has said in an interview with Catalan radio station RAC 1 that the striker is not considering an exit:

"Fernando feels good about the fact that the Barcelona fans want him to join their club, but he's not considering to leave Liverpool at this moment. He has four more years left on his contract and he's very happy in England."

Asked about the rumour linking Liverpool forward and Spanish international Fernando Torres (24) with a move to Barcelona (read more here), Antonio Sanz, a spokesperson of the player's agency Bahía, has denied in an interview with Catalan radio station Onda Cero that Torres would have talked about a transfer with Barcelona president Joan Laporta at the FIFA World Player gala in Geneva last month:

"I was there at the gala and it was just a very friendly greeting. Fernando was saying hello to Messi and Xavi, who were also nominated, and both Laporta and Txiki Begiristain came to greet him. It was nothing more that that. There's wasn't time to discuss anything. It was a very short chat.

At this moment, the option of joining Barça is not on the table. Fernando is not thinking about it. Barça's first option is to renew Eto'o. We know that people in Barcelona like Fernando because of his performances at Atlético Madrid but there's nothing more for now."

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona is interested in Liverpool forward and Spanish international Fernando Torres (24).

Barcelona president Joan Laporta would have had a first informal but positive meeting with Torres during the FIFA World Player gala in Geneva last month.

If Barcelona wouldn't be able to close a renewal deal with Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o this year, which is still the first option of the club, Torres would be the main target to replace the Cameroonian striker, ahead of Valencia's Villa and Lyon's Benzema.

Asked about the rumours linking him with several European top clubs, Torres said at a sponsor event yesterday that he is focused on Liverpool: "There has been a lot of talk about a possible transfer to Real Madrid, Chelsea or Barcelona. I can only say that I don't see myself playing at one of those teams, nor in one of the many other teams I've been linked to. I have to remind that I have a long contract with Liverpool and that's it."

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona wants to sign a star player with the money the club has received for Ronaldinho and probably will receive for Eto'o, who also could be included in a deal.

With the Adebayor option dropping back because of the asking price, the paper gives this list of six possible transfer targets:

Didier Drogba (30)
Fernando Torres (24)
David Villa (26)
Carlos Tévez (24)
Robinho (24)
Frédéric Kanouté (30)
