Barcelona's medical staff has announced that Barcelona player Lionel Messi (22) is doubtful for the first leg of the Spanish super cup against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

New tests today have indicated that the player has suffered an overburdening of an adductor and one of the quadriceps muscles at the front of his left thigh. Messi will now undergo treatment to remove the inflammation and the evolution of the injury will determine if the player will be available for the super cup game.

Madrid sports paper Marca meanwhile claims that it's almost certain that Messi will not play on Sunday. Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola doesn't want to take risks and will therefore not let the Argentinian play. The player's father and agent Jorge Messi would have confirmed to the paper that he will not play.

Despite the problems he suffered yesterday (read more here), Barcelona player Lionel Messi (21) has done a light training session this morning. Messi did some stretching and running on his own.

Asked about the quadriceps problems of Messi, Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola has said at a press conference that it will be decided tomorrow if Messi will play tomorrow against Getafe:

"Messi is fine, it's nothing bad. He has some discomfort and he has been training apart from the group today, but he trained good. Until now he always had problems in the back of his leg, now it's in the front. We'll see tomorrow if he'll be in the match squad and if he plays. He sure looks motivated to play."

Barcelona's medical staff has announced that Barcelona right wing attacker and Argentinian international Lionel Messi (21) got injured at the end of the training session earlier today.

Messi had some troubles in the quadriceps, the muscles on the front of the thigh, of his right leg. Several medical tests have shown that the player doesn't have a serious muscle injury.

The availibity of Messi for Sunday's game against Getafe is doubtful although it is not yet clear if and how long the player would be out. This will depend on the evolution of the troubles in the coming hours and days since the club in the first place wants to exclude further risks.

Catalan sports paper Sport reports that Barcelona forward Lionel Messi (21) didn't participate in the first part of yesterday's training session.

After the Sporting game, Messi had some minor muscle troubles and the staff therefore decided to give the player some personal and specific exercises aiming to avoid overburdening and more serious problems. After that, Messi joined his team-mates for the rest of the session.

It is believed that the problems are under control now and that Messi will be in perfect conditions to play against Sporting Gijón on Sunday.
