Vertonghen unaware of Barcelona interest

Asked about the rumours linking him with a move to Barcelona (read more here), Ajax defensive midfielder and Belgian international Jan Vertonghen (22) has said in an interview with Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws that he didn't hear anything about the supposed interest:

"This would be fantastic but I don't know anything about it. I first had a good laugh, but if it's correct, it would of course be incredible. We're talking about Barcelona here!

Usually I don't really get carried away by this kind of rumours, but if the source is a serious paper, I maybe should change my opinion. For the moment, I am having an excellent time at Ajax. Because of some injured players, I might have to start the season as left back defender but there certainly will come new chances for a position in midfield."

Anonymous said...: LOL, it is usually the case that players we are linked with can't believe it, because they are so far from the Barcelona level of quality, and they know it themselves. That includes Verthongen too of course, who isn't even a regular starter for Ajax who finished behind AZ and Twente last season.; 31 July 2009 at 05:53
Han said...: If you are captain of ajax, as he has been on numerous occasions, I think you are a regular starter.
To be complete, the guy can pretty much play every position in midfield and defence and this versatility makes that he changes place AT the pitch quite often. Which again doesn’t mean he is not a regular starter.; 31 July 2009 at 07:07
