Pique could be an option in midfield

Asked about the rumoured option that he could play as defensive midfielder when Barcelona players Yaya Touré and Seydou Keita will leave for the Africa Cup in January, Barcelona player Gerard Piqué has said at a press conference that it's up to Barcelona manager Guardiola to make that decision:

"I played there with Zaragoza and I wouldn't have any problems in doing it again. I haven't played here in that position but that's a decision for the coach. The truth is, however, that he knows that my favourite position is at centre back.

Ibrahimovic? I consider him as one of the most complete players around at the moment. He's physically strong, has great technique and is very good in the air. It's a delight to watch him play. I believe he's a player for Barça. He paid us a brief visit yesterday as he had to go to the hospital for an operation. I'm sure we'll have plenty of time to talk during the tour."

buj said...: I would rather see Busquets or Marquez play DM than using Pique. He's just a rock as a CB. He reads attacking moves well ahead of even the attacker and has height, something we miss even with Marquez.; 29 July 2009 at 02:52

Anonymous said...: Busquets is not considered an out-and-out defensive mid-fielder by Guardiola... I think Guardiola considers him as a Xavi or Iniesta in making. Thats the reason we have been so after a defensive mid-fielder through out the transfer season. If any one doubts that Busquets hasn't got what one needs to be a CM, just check out the recent confed. cup videos. He's got nice vision. Mark my words he's gonna play a very important role this season as CM. We are not gonna be needing any Fabregas after this season :); 29 July 2009 at 03:45

He's a backwards/sideways passer, an aerially strong player and has okay vision when it comes to intercepting passes.
In all the games I've seen with him I haven't seen much flair, passing vision or dribble prowess.
In a team like Barcelona he's the most DM-like DM we have, both Keita and Toure are superior to him offensively.; 29 July 2009 at 04:53

Anonymous said...: sune, i think u have nt watched the confed cup. His ball control and technique were very good thou he was only a bit-part player.
His passing is nt bad either considering he is only a 20 yr old. He needs say 2 seasons before he can play the 'xavi' role.
P.S: The same was thought of xavi whether he can step into the shoes of Guardiola and play the 'guardiola' role. Expect Busquets to transform that into a 'busquets' role.; 29 July 2009 at 07:51
HOSNI said...: Busquets is definatly a futur "xavi" or more a futur "lampard" not really a playmaker but very active defensivly and in attack,a classic "8"..he is very talented but we shouldnt take the risk to put the responsability of the midfield on his shoulders,he is just 20 and doesnt have a full season in the first team,so for me barça should absolutly recruit a new medielder,or take one on lown in junuary; 29 July 2009 at 08:51

But how much do you actually need to be creative when there are the geniuses of Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Alves, Toure and now Ibrahimovic on the pitch? He just hasn't been asked to do more than what he's doing now. I think he was formidable in the Copa and CL final.; 29 July 2009 at 08:58

No I am NOT . What games have you been watching ? Pique's ball skills are NOT Barça quality . His ball cotrol is average . He can't dribble and he can't make accurate short and medium passes . He likes to drill those EPL-type long balls . Try to watch the games more carefully !!; 29 July 2009 at 12:32
