Exit bonus last step for Eto'o transfer

Italian sports paper La Gazzetta dell Sport claims that the negotiations between Eto'o and Barcelona about the exit bonus are the last step before finalizing of the transfer, after the striker yesterday agreed a deal with Inter Milan (read more here).

The player's agent Josep Maria Mesalles would be in Barcelona today to hold talks with Barcelona officials on the exit bonus the Cameroonian striker will receive. The player would be asking for 3 to 4 million euro.

Eto'o, who will reportedly sign a five-year contract worth 10 million euro plus an incentive of 2 million euro for every trophy won by the Italian club, is quoted by the paper as telling Inter sports director Marco Branca yesterday afternoon by phone that he wants to tie his bonuses to team achievements:

"Chief, I am delighted to join Inter, and I'm convinced that we can bring the Champions League to Milan. I don't want bonuses linked with the goals I score. Scoring is my job, and that's what I'm already paid for. Bonuses linked with team successes, like the Champions, is the right way to go. And with this team we can win everything."

fcbee - it's less money for the club to use on transfers so it matters. if we have less money to sign other players yers you will whine so don't talk about other people.

counteroffer to eto'o - 0 or sit on the bench, you have a contract.

i said yesterday that the exit bonus would be between 1-6mil ,its normal. also if inter gets the cl and eto the goal boot next year i think the eto bashers will become inter fans and ask for eto to be sold......

how is it his money? he doesn't have leverage. his only leverage is to stay and leave for free, if barcelona has to pay for him to leave then they might as well just pay for his salary and let him sit on the bench.

and don't try to make a big deal about him tying his bonuses to winning trophies.

inter wanted to give him 9 + bonuses. eto'o rejected the performance bonuses that's the only reason inter went up to 10. otherwise inter would have stopped at 9.5 + 1.

Players have the RIGHT to get a part of the transfer fee.

NouBarca, as much as i agree with you that Eto'o's been bashed too much. You must realize this could be as false as the next thing..or it could be true.

Eto'o did good for us, scored loads of goals and it's a pitty Pep doesn't want him (he'll have his reasons, maybe he's a racist ;-)). Don't like how the board & pep played this last weeks, don't like how sam and/or his agent played it.. But things happen and one thing leads to another.

About the money: if it really is 50 mill, it's a bit too much (i love they'll sign zlatan though, imo(!) better than villa)and i don't like the farewell-bonus. Even if it's normal in the transferworld, i don't think it should be normal..

i'm not bashing eto'o. eto'o is a great striker. i'm just not in favor of the club wasting money.

if eto'o isn't willing to be included in the swap. then we should just forget the swap and go for a different striker. because we're paying 50 + eto'o's release fee. that's too much.

what does that have to do with it? i know it's negotiations.

you want to make it seem like eto'o is doing inter a favor/paycut. in reality it was just a way to negotiate a number both sides are happy with.

Ok, Thank God we are coming to a rare aggrement here. It might not be a good rule for players to have that right, until the rule changes, let tehm (not just Eto) get their full money.
And I dont believe in that consp.theory that Pep might be "racist". He is not. he has Yaya, Keita, Henry, Abidal. I am sure its for other reasons. But he knows whats best for all.

So just let show Sammu a bit of respect and remember him for the good rather than the Bad and same for the Board. I chose to remember people for the Good rather than the Bad. thats why I was "upset" when folks started calling Eto all sorts of names. Lets shake HANDS on this and smash the evil empire (MAD-rid)

I can accept the stated amount for his exit bonus. As some said, if a person's contract gets terminated by his/her employer, by law, he must be paid a compensation i.e some kind of severance payment. 3-4mil is I'm sure acceptable to Laporta and co. as opposed to the rumoured 15mil some said on earlier forum.

As for the 50mil for Ibra, lets just wait for the official announcement. It may be lower than rumoured by Italian press.

here's why i don't think he deserves a big bonus.

the exit bonus is based on the transfer fee the club receives. it's not like the club pays anybody who leaves. we paid for eto'o and also allowed him to shine on our team, so we deserve a transfer fee, and eto'o deserves a portion of that.

in an ideal world we would get a 30 million transfer fee and give eto'o 10-15% of that. (3-4 mil) but eto'o demanded 15 million from the 30 million man city offer and rejected them.

so we're forced to use eto'o in a swap deal that we're not getting any transfer fee from. and the 'value' eto'o is being transfered for is impossible to calculate. it could be as little as 10-15 million worth of value if we're already paying 50 million cash to inter. that means we're pretty much giving eto'o for free.

we're not paying him a termination clause like in a regular job. we're transferring him, he doesn't have to look for a new job, we already found him a job with equal/better salary.

he shouldn't get a bonus for a 30 million transfer when we're not getting 30 million for him.

you keep claiming he deserves an exit bonus (which is always a portion fo the transfer fee. he refused to be sold for any transfer fee, we're not gettign any fee. why would he get a big exit fee?

eto'o already made more than me in my whole life the first year he played at barcelona, what does that have to do with it? he also makes more than you so what's your point? your'e so childish.

I GOT 650 euros when i left my last job, my agent got 40 euros for the transaction and my new employer took a credit to pay the stamps for the new contract . i could leave following the fifa laws as i was in my last year of contract but my last employer was a friend of my uncle i couldnt leave as a thief.

We're not getting any fee? You think we would have had Ibra for 50 after Kaka, who hasn't done anything over the last two years, went to Madrid for 65? Ri-di-cu-lous. Anti-Eto'o rage affects the brain, that's clear.

Anyway, whatever you say: Eto'o will get the bonus he's entitled to both as part of the transfer fee and as compensation for Barça throwing him out.

kaka is worth more than ibra, kaka has ballon d'or, champion's league, world cup, kaka's younger, more marketable.

ibra's worth 60 million at the most.

if we pay 50 million + 5 million exit fee. then we only got 10 million worth of transfer fee and gave eto'o half of it? exit fees are 10% - 15% of the transfer fee.

your brain is effected, not mine.

Ibra 60? Your just doing anything to prove that Eto'o is worth nothing. Like someone said yesterday: maybe you can say that Eto'o is actually worth minus 50, so you can say we got Zlatan for free.

Moratti said before he was worth as much as Cristiano. With the 50 cash, 30 for Eto', 7 for Hleb, we're coming close...


Again, whatever you in say: he'll get the bonus he's entitled to, so stop whining. Be happy the player you hate is finally gone.

Eto'o is getting an 'Exit Bonus' mainly because the club requested he leave. He did not hand in a transfer request hence he should be entitled to a good bonus.

Here is another way of looking at it. You have worked for a company for 'x' amount of years. The company wants you to leave so they offer you a redundency. This happens all the time and in senior positions it is often referred to as a 'Golden Handshake'. It is not uncommon for senior executives to be paid millions to leave a company.

Eto'o deserves what he gets. He has been fanstastic for us. No one can doubt his commitment. Yes, he may be opionionated but he has worked very, very hard for the team.

I wish him well :-)

football transfers are not the same as corporate employment. eto'o didn't serve us for 30 years.

if it worked like you said then we would be paying sylvinho an exit bonus for his service to the club.

this is different, we only have 1 more year of contract for eto'o. if he left next year does he deserve a golden handshake bonus? no, he would just get his salary and then leave for free. we have that alternative.

if eto'o helped the club by getting a 30 million transfer fee i would be all for him getting 4-5 million, his portion that he deserves.

he forced barca to swap him for very little value with his salary demands and reluctance to accept an exit. he deserves a smaller bonus. what part of that is illogical?

barca gets more money = eto'o deserves more of the bonus. eto'o dictated barca get less money = eto'o gets less bonus.

saviola got teh bonus because he gave up half of his wages, real madrid was basically jsut paying back his other half of the wage.s

eto'o is getting higher wages. i agree eto'o deserves a portion of the transfer fee, but the transfer fee is almost nil, he doesn't dserve a bonus as if the trnasfer fee is 30 million (he rejcted it)

eto'o's contract also expires, we should let it if we have to pay him 5 million to leave.

People, we always wander what "details" in a contract may be.. Well, these things are..

Not the salary and possible trophee-bonus, but all these strange things we almost never hear about, unless there's some disagreement. We can read the salary and bonus on every site when a deal is done, but these kinda things never come out, because they don't seem that important. But now you see..

Anon you clearly know nothing about Corporate life. Most Senior Executives, CEO, CFO in leading companies are on a CONTRACT. This is usually a fixed term contract over 3-5 years with bonuses and incentives for performance etc.

Like in football if they see out their contracts without renewing (Sylvinio) they can usually negoatiate with other companies. If they are forced out, they usually get paid the remainder of the contract plus exit bonuses.

A perfect example was here in Australia when the CEO of our largest Telecom company was requested to leave before his contract term ended. He was on a 5 year contract and left after 4. He was given a golden handshake of about $10 million and other bonuses for various aspects of his job to leave.

In my line of work this is not uncommon. Senior Executives are paid on a different scale and are on different contracts to all other staff. They are not under the Awards and aggrements covered under state or federal legistation to protect lower paid workers. They are usually individually negotiated with solicitors with many incentives and exit clauses.

I am happy to give you a lesson in capitalism anytime :-)

first of all, i understand corporate buyouts. they happen in a lot of different sports.

but WE"RE NOT BUYING OUT ETO"O"S CONTRACT. WE"RE TRANSFERRING HIM.

we're facilitating eto'o's exit a year early. he gets to go earn his higher salary a year early, and not wait a year sitting on the bench. eto'o is getting a benefit from teh transfer as well.

the transfer bonus is NOT A BUYOUT. we're not talking about the same thing. the transfer bonus is a portion of the transfer fee the player is entitled to.

if we're buying him out we would have bought him a long time ago.

and we would not buyout him for 5 million when he could go out and earn 10 million more. we could just pay the 7.5 million and let him sit on the bench.

we're trying to transfer him so that at least we get a transfer fee after paying 24 million for him. that's the difference. it coudl be mutually beneficial, but right now barcelona is barely getting any benefit if at all. then the best solution would be to just pay his salary for one more year of service.

eto'os choice is to take less money, and get the money earlier (this year). or wait and get a full bonus, and get the big contract later (next year).

you guys want eto'o to have all the benefits he would get next year, this year. while we're paying full price for ibra.

our benefit is ibra, but we could easily buy a different striker. villa for 50m, forlan for <36, fabiano for 20. there are alternatives.

but if we have to pay eto'o a big exit bonus then after all that's said and done we're basically paying ibra's full price in cash, then there's no benefit.

Guardiola wants him out, so staying is probably not the way the club wants it. So they've forced themselves to find a buyer and are willing to do crazy tings for that. You can't blame Eto'o that the club wants him out and to negotiate now the best he can. Would you give any gifts to the employer who throws you out? I sure wouldn't.

no, certainly i wouldn't help the club unless it benefited me. but eto'o is getting benefited anyway by leaving early.

like i said, it 'could' be mutually beneficial. if eto'o isn't getting enough benefit then he can just say no, easy enough. if eto'o's exit bonus is too high then the club can say no too. and just live with having him on the bench one last year. that would hurt eto'o too.

50 + exit bonus is almost there. it's 60 at the most. go on the forza inter forums. none of them want eto'o, they all preferred 55 million straight up for ibra.

the benefit is so small that it's not worth it, you could just pay the 5 million left, after you pay the 50 + exit bonus.

I just can´t take that Barca blowing the money away like Real (if the numbers are for real !!!).

The board already failed on getting a good deal done but now they can not accessorily allow that Inter and Eto´o let us bleed that much.

It´s not about Eto´o or his agent or Inter, they have to get what they can get. But there is a point where its just getting inadmissible.

I prefer losing 7,5 and playing without Ibra than the current deal.

Anon Dude almost all players who 'do not' request a transfer ask for an exit bonus because they did not initiate the transfer.

This may or may not be a portion of the transfer fee. The same happens in business all the time. If my boss came to me and said he wanted to get rid of me, I would ask for a severance payment and an incentive payment to leave. How is that not the same with Eto'o situation???

His employer Barca has told him they don't want him. He wanted to stay being 'under contract' but he was prepared to leave. He has asked for a severance payment / exit bonus to facilitate his leaving. Why is that so difficult to understand??

stop comparing football transfers to your company. i have a job, i understand what goes on in a company. stop being so condescending.

we're not paying him severance for being tied to his contract. that's not the issue here. if that was the issue we would have just done that already, or left him on the bench for his salary.

what about players who want to go to big clubs but don't request a transfer? they still get a portion of the fee. not only do they get a huge raise, they get a big bonus to leave? huh?

professional footballers aren't exactly the same as your typical corporate employee. clubs are 'entitled' to a fee for helping to 'make' the player, proiding a stage, setting him up for the next big contract. however the player himself deserves a portion of that fee, that's the bonus we're talking about, NOT severance.

1. If your boss throws you out before the end of the contract, you're getting a bonus.

2. If you have a clause in your contract that says you're getting part of the transfer fee, you'll get that part. In this case it will be part of the valuation of the transfer given by Inter and Barcelona.


You can try to change those simple fact, but you won't get there.


And leaving him on the bench is not an option because the coach doesn't want to have him anymore because of his feeling, so stop referring to that as an option.

1. it has everything to do with it, if the bonus is holding up your new sweeter deal and ruining your career. the boss may not want you anymore but he still has the option to pay you to do nothing. (which only hurts eto'o who could make more, plus be a star else where)

Dude the bonus can come in different forms and terms. Not all players get a portion of the transfer fee you are calling this bonus.

Who says a player deserves a portion of the transfer fee? That is something that is negotiated between all the parties invovled. Did Henry get a portion of the transfer fee as bonus? What about Ronnie? CR9??

You don't know what bonuses they were paid and what was stipulated in their aggrements.

My underlying point is that Eto'o should be entitled to an exit bonus irrespective of whether that comes out of the transfer fee or not. Who cares where it comes from or what it is called?? He deserves it. I am not necessarily calling it 'buying him out.' Just give him the money because he didn't request or initiate the transfer. Simple as that.

it's not about greed, it seems, it was a desperate try to convince barca making him stay.
even when barca told him last year, that he's unwanted, he gave all and helped us winning everything.

1. No, he won't. Taxes in Italy are higher, so he'll probably have the same as he has now. And it will anyhow be largely compensated by the bigger signing bonus.

2. So? He has already won everyting on club level.

3. So? And he has shown he doesn't need much practice to be on top. And it's not as if he'll gonna lose his spot in the Cameroon team. Or as if Cameroon are the big favorites for the World Cup.


If you would want to hurt him, you should let him play, cause then he might get injured and miss next season's transfer. That's the only way he'll lose, something you want seem to want so badly.

1. the tax is lower for FOREIGN players in the first 5-6 years. period has sailed loooooong ago for eto'o. his taxes are for all intents and purposes, the same in italy as in spain.

2. laugh, really? it doesn't matter for a football star to sit out one year? do you have any idea what that does to a career. you think he would be getting any kind of commercial revenues sitting on the sidelines? and forget the financial benefits. think about his legacy. he'll have spent one of his prime years not playing football. a footballer has 3-6 prime years tops.

I don´t care about what part cost us this or that one that much. It´s about the package. Barca will get hurt anyway and thats the fault of barcas board!!! We will lose our face, money and two players to get one who can bring at its best just little more effort than eto'o. Or on the other hand we can lose much less money and give playing time to Herny, Bojan und probably Keirrison if Eto'o don´t want to work well for his money. Eto#o is bound by a contract like we are. I know Pep doesn´t want him anymore but we can not destroy the image of Barcelona because of that.

However this situation will be solved it´s epic part of Barcelonas history and will be remembered.

Certainly knowing that Guardiola doesn't want him. So they take the risk of burning bridges with him.... Last year, the captains convinced the club to let Eto'o stay.

And Xavi said he thought Eto'o and Villa could play together, so praising Villa didn't mean burning down Eto'o.

Where were Henry Villa Etoo Messi Xavi Toure and Iniesta going to fit with Etoo having to play almost every game? They may have said etoo and villa could play together after they realized etoo could be hurt but their words were clear before Villa in = Etoo out. They are just being polite now and trying to not decrease inter's view of etoo.

Eto'o has nothing to lose if the circumstances are getting well for him. He tries get get as much as he can which is pretty much comprehendible and his right. But we are not that weak that we need to comply with everything given by Int. Mail. and the Eto'o squad which is our right, too.

If the deal doesn´t work out for us bring Eto'o back on our team and look what happen. If it works out well, good. If not, bench and try to sell him. Everything we would get is more than we would get now. And we will give our talent a sign of our faith in their abillity.

No, they can't. Sending someone to the B-team (which by the way is not possible according to the rules of the Spanish football federation) or letting him train on his own, could be obstruction to work according to Spanish albour laws. So you could release yourself from the exit bonus, but pay a bigger compensation (apart from the lawyers).

And this has nothing to do with staying with the first team and playing little. if his stays with the first team and doesn't play that won't be a problem. But Guardiola doesn't want that.


At the end of the day, Eto'o will get the bonus we all would get if we were in his place.

Am tired of this dragging saga of Sammu and people loosing their minds here. Lets just think about the good that Sammu has done to us and wish him the very best wishes. I'm a barca die harder and coming in here everyday to look at what is happening, its looking like we are fighting between ourselves to the benefits of others. Lets put our acts together and wait for our final 1st eleven. Mistakes that are done are over, but we can learn thru them to avoid them in the future. If Pep decides Sammu must leave, then he knows and has the reasons behind that move.
