Valdes renewal negotiations broken off

All Spanish and Catalan media claim that the negotiations on the renewal of the contract of have been broken off after a new meeting between the club and the player's agent Ginés Carvajal this morning.

The player, whose current contract expires in 2010, could now leave this summer while Barcelona might start searching the market in order to sign a new goalkeeper.

After days of negotiations between the club and the player's representatives, the parties have not been able to find a deal and the gap between the positions was too wide. While Barcelona offered the player to renew for four more years, until 2014, and earn a year salary of 6 to 7 million euro gross, the player's representative asked for 9 million euro, as much as players like Xavi and only behind Barcelona player Lionel Messi.

Good riddance. I heard at last the club raised its offer to 7 million over 4 years. That's about 3 million too much. I was hoping his agents would reject this generous contract.

He wants 9 million euros. In order to get the equivalent of that salary in the English Premier League with taxes & exchange rate factored in he would have to get a salary of £160,000 per week. That would make him the highest paid player in the EPL along with Robinho...

He's asking too much. Barca offered him a huge pay rise, but he doesn't deserve more than Barca offered.
AC Milan want Eto'o+VV. An estimated value is around 65M! If I am Laporta I'd take 50.

Please get Asenjo.

This is very surprising to me. Why would Valdes think he can earn that much? Megalomaniac...
On the other hand: just from looking at him one could see he is not that smart of a guy, even though I must say I like his goalkeeping skills. I am also surprised Barca would go that high in order to keep him. I dont know what to believe anymore, but considering tha escalating financial crisis it's correct to try and minimize the cost for salarys.

he's insane. after all the mistakes he did in that season he demands such a wage?

hopefully they sign someone else who can save us some points instead of making gifts for the opponents.

btw: remember the freekick from ronaldo in the cl-finals. we have been very very lucky that they didn't score. 0:1 and it would be a different game

By the way, let's not blame Valdes for this. He's entrusting the situation to his father and agent. They obviously think they could negotiate a deal for more than 6-7 million. Valdes just made a bad choice of trusting the wrong people.

I'm hoping Barcelona signs someone to compete for the position, then take the deal off the table and offer 5 million a year. Even if his contract expires no other team will offer him close to 9 million per season. Perhaps some competition will spark Valdes to improve and then we could still offer him a good contract next year. Or perhaps we'll just have found a new starting goalkeeper. Either way we need to sign a GK to keep our bases covered.

I also believe it's to much money. But you guys have to think one more time if you want Asenjo to be our no. 1. The guy is 21 and will crack under pressure. VV has won CL and the league with us and you're comparing him to Asenjo "because he was good in the U-21 yesterday"?

i feel sorry for valdes, he made a REALLY poor choie for an agent and is now going to pay for it. he has been great for us no matter what anyone says, and we value him so highly coz he's a cantera player, they know the philosophy of the club better than outside players.

hope they can sort something out. i think board are being quite clever, they offer him 7mil now, his agent says no, they say off you go then, no-one offers him anywhere near that much and his agent comes back cap in hand and accepts 5mil or less.

either way wew need to look for new keeper. anyone know how good lloris is? i only know him from FM!

Dwelling on the past will not earn us more titles. We have to assess objectively what is the best way to be successful in future seasons.

That said, of course I appreciate Valdes, I think he was key in the treble run. I also think that no other club in the world rates Valdes as highly as we do. He however, does not deserve to be one of the best paid players in the world. And if the choice is to sign him to a contract that'll break our wage scale or find a new keeper, then I'd rather us find a new keeper. I would love to keep him, just not for that price.

i just can remember that he did his job... almost. i remember all the points we lost because of him and i remember that i calculated the lost points.

Everyone should calm down about Valdes. I have highlights DVDs of EVERY match this season. There is only one match that Valdes directly cost us, because of an error: Espanyol at the Camp Nou, where he cleared the ball directly to an opposing player, who buried the shot.

Should he have stopped the Juninho free kick in Lyon? Probably. You can count the goal-scoring errors that Valdes leaked this season on the fingers of one hand.

So knock off the hating, unless you're all going to rip Eto'o for missing chances, Messi for not passing to open men and Iniesta for hitting the post or missing the goal all of the time.

Valdes is a very good keeper, and a very good keeper for Barca. He's quick off the line, and does indeed have a number of goal-stopping saves. How quickly we forget about the Clasico at the Camp Nou, where Valdes stopped Sneijder and then Drenthe. Or stonewalling Drogba TWICE from point-blank range at the Camp Nou. Or stopping Ronaldo in the second half of the CL Final.

No. Let's focus on his errors, and hate him because like any player, he's going for the moon. Eto'o is demanding 10 MILLION per season, and everybody wants to keep him, right? Despite the bad first touch and disappearances on the wing.

Should we pay Valdes more than any other player on the side except for Messi? No. No way. But the wage we've offered him is very fair. If he doesn't want to accept it, that's his prerogative. But he was critical to the treble this season, and deserves respect.

You must live under a rock if you think everybody wants to keep Eto'o, Kxevin. The wage demands of these players are simply way too excessive. And no, 7m is not "very fair" for Valdes either, let alone 9m!! Iniesta earn 5m and he is among the top 3 players in the world! Valdes isn't even among top 100! Let us be serious here, there are alot of good goalkeeping options out there, and many keepers could do the job Valdes does.

Valdes is a good keeper, but he is certainly replaceable. His demands are unbelievable.

His agent points to his goals allowed record, but most of that is down to Barcelona's possession. Valdes has very little to do because the team keeps the ball so well.

He came up big a few times late in the year and deserves respect for that, but he really needs to reign in his agent if he's serious about staying. No one will pay him that salary.

I have always believed that Valdes is the best goalkeeper for Barca, and I still do. However, if he's asking for 9 mil, I'd say that he's very rude and I wouldn't give him that. Never. Asking to be earning just like Xavi is ridiculous.

Obviously, "everybody" wanting to keep Eto'o is a bit of hyperbolic excess, used to make a point.

Frankly, I would sell Eto'o before I sold Valdes, all things being as they are.

Could "a lot" of keepers do the job Valdes does? Good question. How many keepers are as quick off the line, or are as comfortable with the ball at their feet? Think about the guys who make the stop, pick up the ball and boot it up the field as far and as hard as they can. The end.

Now think of how Valdes plays. Yes, he makes mistakes. All keepers do. He might not be the best keeper in the world, but he might be the best keeper for Barca.

He still ain't worth 9m a year.

I totally agree with everything you said, but at the same time I also agree with what all the others had to say too.

Basically you made your conclusions based on Valdes performance this season and this season only, and I do agree he was key towards the treble and made crucial saves. For me Valdes was the man of the match against Chelsea not Iniesta (if you take both the home and away matches in consideration). However looking at the situation from a different perspective Valdes was mainly inconsistent in the past 3-4 seasons. So yes he does deserve a pay increase but he is not irreplaceable nor is he world class. But I have to admit that I like his personality and would be a bit sad to see him leave.

Kxevin.....*shaking my head*...Eto'o could score 80 goals per season and you would still find something wrong with him. Henry could score 2 goals per season and he would be the best and the coach would need sacking, in fact we would have to buy better support for Henry.

I'm not saying you can't have a favourite but be fair. At every chance you just nail Eto'o. What is is that you really don't like about him? Could you please let me know?

Valdes is a great goalkeeper, it took him long to convince many of us that he is in fact a true number 1, after this season there schould be no one who doubts that, if you do, then you just haven't seen enough games!
But to replace him is hard! A type like Asenjo would be great but I have my doubts about placing a young keeper in the goal (for example valdes, how long did he had to be in the team before he really stoot out as a real number one?, Long! so it's a risk)
Beside Asenjo, think of Manuel Neuer (Schalke) and Igor Akinfeev (CSKA) he is one of the greatest talents I have ever seen.
To back that up it's Guus Hiddink who feels the same way!!
I think it would be best (if possible) tp get an more experienced keeper like Cech, Buffon, Reina, Julio Cesar.. But that would be verry hard and we would have to crack the bank!
So my choise: Igor Akinfeev!

You need to visit The Offside more, Anonymous, where you'd find effusive praise for Eto'o and what he does for the side. You'd also find something that shocked a lot of people there: in the season aggregate points totals, Henry wasn't at the top.

But it isn't a question of "nailing" Eto'o. His contributions are unassailable. But do you honestly think he is going to be any better than he was this season? Or that if we keep him, the side will be any better? I'll help you out with that one: No. Because there won't be a Plan B attacking option for the parked buses that we are going to be seeing all season.

Which means what? That a keeper who fits the side's needs is more crucial than ever, because scorelines are going to be lower. And if we only have one or two chances to score, I don't want those chances to be resting on the feet of someone with dodgy control.

But make no mistake: I'm not, contrary to popular belief, anti-Eto'o. I am pro-Barca. He has every right to seek whatever price he wants, just as it is my right as a cule and soci, to resent the impediment he is presenting to a) renewing or b) getting lost so that we can buy someone to replace him.

That is completely different than not liking what a player does for the side. Eto'o was one of the keys to the treble. But so was Valdes. And Henry. And Iniesta, Xavi, Messi, Yaya and just about anyone else you can name. Team effort.

And you're right about Valdes, Barca Brn. He definitely benefitted from our defense and possession of the ball this season. But when he had to, he mostly did the business. He was inconsistent the past few seasons, but so was the side. If we're going to hold past performances against a player, there aren't a lot of players on Barca who wouldn't be in for some vituperation, right?

But he's come into his own at the right time, which is lucky for us.

He still isn't worth 9 million.

i cant believe the things i hear about valdes here.only cost us 1 goal this season huh.......i will say a fraze that an old coach tells "they dont say anything to keepers if they concede a goal in penalty shoot out,but if they clear it they become heroes" ,what i want to say is that i want that kind of guy in our keeper,not a guy that saves penalties but a guy that even when 1 on 1 or at shoots from far away will be stable,and the defence will trust him,

and dont say but he won the zamora trophy,in what team he won that?i talk about the player as individual,also he was offered a great contract which he turned down"even the player not his agent,cause from barcelona said they wanted to talk with the player personally,i think they have till now"

bottom line is that the team dont want to have a keeper with a huge contract,and they offered what they thought it was best,and face it valdes isnt irreplaceble.

for asenjo,man i am watching asenjo 2 years now and he is awesome keeper,and all that about he will break down from the pressure are crap,he is a proffesional,we will also have pinto and mino if he screw up like you say and pinto is better than valdes ....

why cant you face it that valdes was overvalued in barca ,was lucky that we had a dream team and he established himself as n1 without having as much talent as other great keepers have,and almost any other keeper could do what he does.

he wanted to earn more than xavi and iniesta......behind only by messi .... who valdes? i dont know if he is your family or sth to defend him like that but come on m8...

There are plenty of keepers who could could fill in his role at a fraction of his wage demands.

He's probably the best 1 on 1 big team keeper in European football but is dreadful from set pieces and long shots.

Either way it evens out.

Valdes is good but 9 million is just too much. He should drop his demand to indeed 6 or we have to let him out. No way another club will pay him 9. Eto'o can at least hope thet he'll get 10 somewhere else, Valdes not. If we give in to this, what would hold other players from asking the same? Guess Toure's agent is following all this closely...

And everyone following this blog for a while knows Kevin is anti-Eto'o in an unhealthy way. And that's his right but just don't give us the talk around it.

as much as i like VV n his courage n attitude, this is just absurd money! BAD AGENT doing this. even Eto is asking for this much salary. i say sell Eto n VV and get someone gud enuf to replace them. sad to see them leave but cant help it.

kxevin is not anti eto'o. his just being rational. every barca fan respects eto'o.
but eto'o should give barca some respect too. it goes both ways. if he stay just so he can leave for free next season, thats disrespectful to barca. even ronaldinho agreed on leaving and even having a cut from his own money.

Pinto did great the few times he got the chance, like the copa semi-final and the last league games. He has been man of the match several times. I wonder what he could have done had he played every game like Valdes?

You know what would be funny? Offer him 5 million a year then put incentives in the contract that gives him a million for every international cap next year!!!!!! Hell, I'd say 9 million for every cap!!!That would be insult to injury!

Wow. "Anti-Eto'o in an unhealthy way?" I'll have to check on that, but I'm feeling pretty healthy right about now.

If anyone would like to visit the Offside, my Eto'o worldview is clear: love what he's done for the club, love the goals, think he's peaked and we're going to improve, he can't be our striker.

It's as simple as that.

As for Valdes, everything right now is theoretical. Anyone who doesn't realize that they're with the best club on the planet right now is crazy. Holding that club hostage is not the way to do it. Valdes isn't worth 9m. We all agree. The rest is a debate that I've already stated my position on.

I hope Valdes remains, that the club and his representatives work out a contract that satisfies all parts. Valdes has been a great asset to the team for many seasons, and this one he prooved that there is now reason to doubt his class.

He might never be Spains first pick for international duty, but he is undoubtly competing for 1st keeper spot with Casillias and Reyna.

Reyna could be an option of course would a contract not be signed, but Valdes has his heart and soul at Barcelona, and he stood by the side even when the club tried to sign other first team keepers. This shouldn't be conisdered lightly.

Barcelona should be a club that values loyal players and supports them. Their fans, like those of who us who are reading this blog, should give credit to Valdes and be supportive, much unlika many of the commentators here above.

How is competing with Casillas and Reina when he can't even get called up after winning the treble? I think that's a pretty clear indication of how he's rated outside of Barcelona. At this point after 5-6 years of being Barcelona's undisputed #1, entering his prime at 27 years old he can't beat out Palop or Diego Lopez for the 3rd keeper spot on Spain. With Asenjo coming up too he may never be called up.

As far as loyalty, where's his loyalty in asking for a unrealistic contract when he knows Barcelona already values him higher than any other club in the world. Loyalty would be offering at least as much as what other teams are willing to offer, not breaking the wage structure for an inconsistent player who most believe to be Barcelona's weakest link.

Maybe I was a bit off earlier. I don't think he is Spains 3rd choice keeper for international duty, neither do I think Valdes will be called up unless both Casillias and Reyna suffer long term injury, and not even then.

But I do think he prooved last season he has the ability to be on par with the absolute best Spanish keepers. And your right, besides Casillias and Reyna there is also Lopez to consider, there certainly was and is Palop, and maybe one should consider young Asenjo even, I agree.

I don't dislike Valdes. I hope we keep him. I just don't think he's worth the money his agent is demanding. Maybe this is good for us. This will give us a chance to sign Asenjo and give Valdes competition. Then after we sign Asenjo Valdes will come to his senses and accept a more reasonable contract. Then we'll finally have some competition to push Valdes. Who knows, maybe if Milito hadn't gotten injured, we never would have gotten the chance to resign Pique.
